The Kentucky Derby and Blanton's Bourbon

Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon

You've got your big hat, your seersucker suit, and your pastel-colored dress.  You're headed to a party to watch the 138th annual running of the Kentucky Derby; what more do you need?  Bourbon, of course!  And not just any Bourbon....Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon.

"The finest bourbon in the world comes from a single barrel. That's the way Colonel Albert B. Blanton first bottled his private reserve bourbon nearly a century ago.  Personally tasting and choosing each barrel, these barrels were reserved and bottled for ambassadors, dignitaries, family and friends becoming the world's first single barrel bourbon."

We suggest you drink it straight with just a few droplets of spring water, but Derby traditionalists might appreciate this mint julep recipe:

2 Cups sugar

2 Cups water

Sprigs of fresh mint

Crushed ice

Silver Julep Cups

No Derby Party is complete without the Mint Julep which has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Blanton's Kentucky Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon $58.99/ 750 ml.

The Breckenridge Bourbon 'Mountain Mule'

We have nothing against the traditional Moscow Mule made with vodka, but these cold winter months have us craving something that will offer the same refreshment, but also add a bit of much needed warmth.  The Mountain Mule does just that, with the smokey-sweet Breckenridge bourbon giving it a heavier, deeper flavor.  Skip the copper mug all together and put it in a no frills enamel coffee mug for ultimate mountain feel.  Cheers!

You Need:

2oz Breckenridge Bourbon
4-6 oz Goslings Ginger Beer
1/2 Lime

Squeeze the lime and drop the shell into your favorite coffee mug, add a few cubes of ice, pour in Breckenridge bourbon then fill to top of mug with Goslings Ginger Beer and stir.

Note: I personally prefer squeezing 1/4 orange instead of lime, but either works!

Breckenridge Bourbon

"Besides the unique high-rye mash bill, Breckenridge Distillery owes its success to careful mingling of casks at each bottling and the perfect Breckenridge snowmelt water used for proofing. The natural minerality of the water source ensures the luscious mouth-feel, depth of flavor, and long finish making Breck Bourbon one of the very best Whiskeys in the World."

This Colorado Bourbon is made with 56% yellow corn, 38% green rye, 6% malted barley and has been aged for an average of 2-3 years in new American White Oak barrels.  $43.99
