The Kentucky Derby and Blanton's Bourbon

Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon

You've got your big hat, your seersucker suit, and your pastel-colored dress.  You're headed to a party to watch the 138th annual running of the Kentucky Derby; what more do you need?  Bourbon, of course!  And not just any Bourbon....Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon.

"The finest bourbon in the world comes from a single barrel. That's the way Colonel Albert B. Blanton first bottled his private reserve bourbon nearly a century ago.  Personally tasting and choosing each barrel, these barrels were reserved and bottled for ambassadors, dignitaries, family and friends becoming the world's first single barrel bourbon."

We suggest you drink it straight with just a few droplets of spring water, but Derby traditionalists might appreciate this mint julep recipe:

2 Cups sugar

2 Cups water

Sprigs of fresh mint

Crushed ice

Blanton's Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon

Silver Julep Cups

No Derby Party is complete without the Mint Julep which has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Blanton's Kentucky Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon $58.99/ 750 ml.

"FIRST, winemakers poured their vintages into bottles and corked them. Then they lost the corks and added screw tops. Then they lost the bottles and sold wine in boxes, next to beer and pretzels at supermarkets. And now, winemakers seeking some pop are canning wine."

Peirano Estates Petite Sirah

"Lodi's climate and soil are ideal for Petite Sirah production, which is why the area is the state's leading producer of this varietal." This wine uses rotary fermentation techniques, which insures that every characteristic and bit of flavor is extracted from the fruit. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, concentrating its fruit and rounding out the flavors.  Test this

The wine's color is dark purple and inky, a quality that is very indicative of Petite Sirah. Your nose may detect aromas of blackberry jam, underbrush, fall spices, and rosemary. The palate offers an explosion of purple and dark fruits such as boysenberry, plum and sweet black cherry. Firm tannins persist throughout the finish with hints of smoke and dark chocolate. This wine calls for a grilled steak!  $13.99
